The names Muhammad; ‘Ali, Fatima, al-Hasan & al-Husayn surrounding the tomb of Sultan ul-Awliya Mawlana Shaykh ‘Abd Allah Daghestani
Q. I have recently read a position posted on Dr. G.F Haddad’s website www.marifah.net, and the article’s slant is towards convincing readers that it is impremissible to curse the murderer of Imam Husayn (rad) and the article claims that “None among our predecessors [salaf] cursed Yazid ibn Mu‘awiyah. Except some who said excessive things urging people to send curses and were extremely biased in this matter and transgressed the limits, like the Rafidis, Khawarij and some among the Mu’tazilis” (And Yazid is Not Cursed After His Death http://marifah.net/a…qarionyazid.pdf). What is the correct Naqshbandi position?
A. The Futuwat Namah by Mullah Husayn Wa’iz Kashifi Sabzawari is one of the most venerated and classical texts of the Naqshbandi greats on adab and manners as taught by the elders of the Naqshbandiyya.
In Part Five: ‘Concerning the Rules of Conduct of the People, Chapter 36: Concerning the Rules of Etiquette for Eating and Drinking’, p. 227 of the English translation of the text by J.R. Crook, Phd, we read regarding the adab of drinking water:
“If asked: What are the six practices of the Prophet (regarding the drinking of water)? Say:
- To drink the water in three draughts.
- To remove the cup from the lips after each draught.
- Not to breathe or blow into the vessel.
- To drink sitting, though to drink standing is also permissible, however, sitting is to be preferred.
- To commence drinking invoking the name of God.
- To praise God after finishing.
It is related from (Imam) Zayn al-Abidin that whenever he drank, he cursed the slayer of Husayn. When asked about it, he said: When in the desert of Karbala, my father (Husayn ibn ‘Ali) advised me to remember his thrist and curse his murderer whenever I drank.” (Excerpted from Futuwat Namah by Mullah Husayn Wa’iz Kashifi Sabzawari An Naqshbandi Translated by J.R. Crook, Phd, Part Five: Chap. 36, p. 227)
Imam ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn’s testimony regarding the order of his gracious father Imam al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali, to remember his murderer whenever one drinks water, and to curse him demonstrates that the statement, “None among our predecessors [salaf] cursed Yazid ibn Mu‘awiyah. Except some who said excessive things urging people to send curses and were extremely biased in this matter and transgressed the limits, like the Rafidis, Khawarij and some among the Mu’tazilis” is actually not correct.
And Allah Knows Best!
